Siemens, Omnipoint to Develop Wireless IP Apps

Siemens AG today said it has formed a venture with Colorado-based wireless communications company Omnipoint Technologies Inc. to develop applications for wireless IP-based (Internet protocol-based) networks.
Under the agreement, Siemens' networking group will acquire a majority stake in Omnipoint's wireless IP-networks division for US$40.5 million [M], the companies said today in a statement. Omnipoint's remaining divisions -- Personal Communications Services Infrastructure Products and Wireless Solutions -- will remain independent. Omnipoint Technologies develops and supplies wireless communication technologies, products and engineering services.

T-Online, T-Mobil Join On WAP, Other Services

Germany's top service provider, T-Online and mobile carrier T-Mobil GmbH yesterday announced a cooperation which will broaden the online services available to T-Mobil's 7 million [M] customers.
The cooperation between the two Deutsche Telekom subsidiaries includes the launch of a WAP-(Wireless Application Service) based service in September, which will allow users of T-Mobil's D1 network to access Web-based content via their mobile phones. The content available on the handsets will come from T-Online's portal, the companies said in a statement.

New German Carrier Targets Wireless Local Loop

A new carrier is venturing into Germany's highly competitive telecommunications markets, seeking a niche by offering users wireless access to a broadband network.
Callino GmbH, which made its official debut at a press conference here today, plans to begin offering customers voice and data services by the end of the year. The company will transmit the traffic over a wireless local loop and its own IP (Internet protocol) network.

German Mobile Users to Get Yahoo Content

Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH and Yahoo Inc.'s German subsidiary, Yahoo Deutschland, have struck a cooperation agreement to let mobile-phone users in Germany access Yahoo content.
Under the agreement, users of Mannesmann's D2 mobile network later this year will be able to read their e-mail and call up Yahoo news, financial information, weather and sports, according to Christian Schwolow, a spokesman for D2. They will also be able to personalize the news. Later, users will be able to call up pared-down graphic displays.

IBM sets world record in disk storage

IBM yesterday said its researchers have set a new world record in density for hard disk data storage, writing and reading data bits so small that 20 billion of them would fit within a square inch.

More than 30,000 OS/2 users have asked IBM to update the operating system with device drivers that support peripherals like graphic cards, DVD drives and digital cameras.

Baan reports $US19m loss for Q1

In a terse earnings report yesterday, Baan reported a loss of $US19 million or 9 cents per diluted share for the first quarter ended March 31.
That compares to net income of $2 million, or 1 cent per diluted share, in the first quarter of 1998, Baan officials said.

Telcos say they stand behind Global One

Deutsche Telekom AG, France Telecom SA and Sprint have reaffirmed their commitment to their three-way Global One telecommunications alliance, responding to a news report which said that Global One would shortly be folded.
