LONDON (09/26/2000) - The U.K.'s homeless problem is as severe as that of most other European countries, and so even in the old university town of Oxford it came as no surprise recently to come across a beggar sitting on the sidewalk. The man was wrapped in blankets and had placed a hat on the pavement in front of him containing a few copper coins. An elderly lady walked by and dropped a couple of pound coins in the hat, multiplying his fortune by at least ten times.

UPDATE - Compaq Sees Need for New Partners

MONACO (09/12/2000) - Compaq Computer Corp. is looking for new types of companies to partner with, Peter Blackmore, Compaq's senior vice president and general manager sales and services, said Tuesday in a speech here at International Data Corp.'s European IT Forum. The hardware vendor to date has mainly partnered with software vendors such as SAP AG and Oracle Corp., as well as service providers like America Online Inc. and Digital Island Inc. However, Compaq is now looking for additional types of partnerships, said Blackmore.

"Our next-generation partners are companies like Commerce One (Inc.), and CMGI (Inc.'s) Engage (Inc.), which is a profiling company. They look at profiles, to enable systems to get that information on their customers," he said.

Blackmore was referring to the need for personalization of Web sites, which has become a buzz word in the electronic-commerce era. Companies need to get as much information as they can on their customers, so that as soon as a customer logs on to their Web site, the customer can be met with the appropriate greetings and offers, suiting his or her particular profile.

Compaq is also looking to partner with Internet telephony companies, he added.

Alcatel, Thomson to Form Digital TV Joint Venture

French networks developer Alcatel SA and Thomson
Multimedia SA announced a new joint venture Wednesday in digital video
networks, as well as products and services for digital and cable TV networks.
The two companies said in a written statement that they expect the new company
to reach sales of 150 million euros (US$156.1 million) and have 500 employees
by the end of this year.
