NSW Police Force taps Unisys for image storage

The NSW Police Force has awarded a 40-month contract for the application and infrastructure support services of its Shared Imagery Management System (SIMS). The system was originally implemented by Unisys in 2009.

The contract is aimed at protecting 2 million digital images and video footage taken each year by the force’s forensic teams.

Manager of digital and biometric technologies at NSW Police, Inspector David Brogden, said the project continues the force’s relationship with Unisys, with the vendor being selected as the systems integrator for customising its digital imagery management in 2009.

“Since the NSW Police Force implemented its digital imagery management system, the volume of digital imagery made available for use in investigations has increased exponentially — from crime scene forensic photography through to CCTV footage from shopping centres and railway stations as well as photos and video submitted by the public,” Brogden said.

“We are now well positioned to take advantage of further innovations such as facial recognition and intelligent video analytics as they become available.”

The new contract will have Unisys work directly with the Operational Information Agency (OIA) and Forensics Services Group (FSG), with the vendor providing on-site support, patch management and system enhancement services.
