AMI Insurance inks virtual tape deal

New Zealand-based AMI Insurance has discarded its physical tape storage for a virtual tape library to back-up its critical business data.

AMI Insurance has a network of 73 branches, two call centres and 22 agencies across New Zealand.

The insurer inked a deal to build and support the virtual tape library with Unisys, amid a continuing 20-year contract for mainframe and data centre services.

Unisys New Zealand managing director, Brett Hodgson, said the hard disk-based storage was used because it involves fewer moving parts and can replicate data more quickly.

”In moving to a virtual tape environment AMI is embracing a forward-looking storage strategy to transform its corporate data centre to respond quickly to continually evolving customer requirements,” Hodgson said.

Back-up data will be mirrored between two Unisys data centres in Auckland and Kapiti.
