IBM, Microsoft Detail Netfinity Web Server

BOSTON (03/29/2000) - IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp. today announced the Netfinity A100 Web Server, a Windows 2000-based Internet appliance specifically designed for Web hosting.

The pizza-box-sized Netfinity A100 is the first offering in IBM's A-Series line of server appliances aimed at corporations, ISPs (Internet service providers) and ASPs (application service providers), according to the companies.

The A100 is designed to fit into racks used by ISPs and corporations, and installation requires little more than plugging it in and flipping a switch, according to Jim Gargan, director of strategy and product marketing for Netfinity at IBM. Typically, appliance installation takes around two-and-a-half hours, but Netfinity A100 is designed to go from the box to operational in five minutes, which is good news for customers, Gargan maintained.

"The faster the server is up and running, the sooner they can generate revenue," Gargan said.

Netfinity 100 Web Server is available in three models, all of which are based on IBM's rack-optimized Netfinity 4000R server, Windows 2000 for Appliances and IBM's Netfinity Web Serving Accelerator Software, according to IBM.

Some details, including the models' names, are still being worked out, but according to IBM, the available specs of the three models are:

-- For under US$6,000, a 650MHz Pentium III chip server with 512 M bytes of RAM (random access memory), a 9G-byte disk drive and dual embedded 10/100 Ethernet;-- A mid-price range server consisting of two 650MHz Pentium III chips with 1G-byte RAM, two 9G-byte drives and dual embedded 10/100 Ethernet; -- For under $16,000, a server with two 750MHz Pentium III chips with 2G bytes of RAM, two 18G-byte drives and a 1G-bit Ethernet adapter card.

The first Netfinity 100 Web Server, probably the midrange model, will be available in the next couple of weeks, and all three models will be available by the end of May, according to IBM.
