Matsushita Joins SyncML Initiative

STOCKHOLM (07/17/2000) - Mobile data synchronization initiative SyncML on Monday added Japan's Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd. to its core sponsor roster, which now counts nine members.

Matsushita Communication Industrial is a unit of consumer-electronics giant Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd., the owner of Panasonic and several other well-known brand names.

Aimed at offering a unified remote data synchronization, SyncML is a protocol that can be used over fixed-line as well as wireless networks.

The SyncML initiative was formed in February by IBM Corp., Lotus Development Corp., Nokia Corp., Palm Inc., Psion PLC and Starfish Software Inc. Swedish telecommunications equipment and mobile phone vendor L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. in March also joined the founding group. To date, 291 companies worldwide have voiced their support for the protocol, according to information from the SyncML Initiative's Web site.
