Commerce One Completes Pilot for Boeing

Commerce One Inc. said Tuesday at the e-Link 2000 conference in Las Vegas that it has successfully completed a pilot program with Boeing Co. to link the latter's trading partners to Exostar Inc., the exchange for the Aerospace and Defense industry.

Working with GE Global exchange Services (GXS), the companies plan to jointly develop more technology and services to further support the Exostar exchange, in an effort to connect up hundreds of members of the trading community. Future plans include integrating Commerce One's XML Portal Connector on the buyer's side, and leveraging GXS's suite of integration capabilities to ensure liquidity for suppliers and buyers, the company said.

Commerce One has been working with Boeing for several months to develop a means of connecting suppliers that use EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) technology to the exchange.

This recent Exostar effort is an extension of Commerce One's and GXS's recent agreement to work together to globally increase access to open electronic marketplaces.

The companies expect to significantly increase the number of exchange participants by providing interoperability between GXS's data transaction and translation technology and services -- including EDI -- and Commerce One's XML Common Business Library-based e-commerce solutions.

Separately Tuesday, Commerce One announced a pending deal with Computer Sciences Corp. to collaborate in implementing and operating business-to-business electronic marketplaces and procurement solutions.

The non-binding memorandum of understanding is expected to lead to a definitive agreement later this year.

The alliance will combine Commerce One's technology with CSC's global outsourcing, hosting, consulting, and systems integration capabilities, the companies said. Preliminary terms of the agreement call for the companies to partner in federal markets in the United States and commercial and governmental markets internationally, building on the CSC European Commerce One practice launched in May.

Commerce One expects CSC to deploy the Commerce One MarketSite Portal solution to help automate its nearly $5 billion in annual spending.
