Legato Bolsters Backup Software Package

Looking to provide users with more manageable, scalable back-up and disaster-recovery features, Legato Systems Inc. this week reinforced its back-up software package.

Introduced at NetWorld+Interop 2000 in Atlanta, NetWorker 6.0 adds support for network-attached storage (NAS) devices, Linux and Windows 2000 servers, as well as a storage-area network (SAN) module that makes LAN-free backup possible.

LAN-free backup promises to relieve networks of traffic destined for storage by moving the back-up data from networks and putting it on servers connected to storage devices by switches or routers.

NetWorker provides back-up support for a number of servers, including NetWare and Unix, as well as servers supporting DB2 and Lotus Notes. The expansion to include Linux and Win 2000 is important to at least one user.

"We are preparing to roll out a Windows 2000 server," says Ray Schlosbon, a systems engineer at Daleen Technologies in Boca Raton, Fla. "Our Unix servers are Sun and [Hewlett-Packard], and we use NetWorker to back them up. From a uniformity standpoint, we can now back up all our servers with one package."

NetWorker 6.0 is compliant with the Network Data Management Protocol standard and supports backup of NAS devices, as well as local or remotely attached tape libraries. The software also allows snapshot backups in which an image of the data is taken, and then changes are transmitted as they are made. The product also lets several servers running NetWorker share a tape library. Initially, Legato will support NAS servers from EMC and Network Appliance. Support for additional NAS servers will be added in the future.

NetWorker also has cross-platform browse and recovery capabilities. For instance, a Unix system can browse Win 2000 backups and recover them to a Windows NT system that has NetWorker installed on it and vice versa. The product also supports Legato Cluster Enterprise, Sun Cluster, Hewlett-Packard MC ServiceGuard, Compaq TruCluster and Microsoft Cluster Services, as well as Win 2000 and Red Hat, SuSe and Caldera Linux.

NetWorker 6.0 is now available starting at US$2,300 for a Linux or NT Server edition.
