IBM to launch Canberra cyber security centre

IBM National Cyber Security Centre to be led by former AFP assistant commissioner

Former Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner and former leader of the Australian High Tech Crime Centre Kevin Zuccato will lead a new IBM security initiative.

IBM announced today it would launch a National Cyber Security Centre in Canberra. IBM said the NCSC would be aligned with the government’s national cyber security strategy.

“With the establishment of the IBM National Cyber Security Centre in Canberra we will provide a destination for government and organisations to proactively collaborate on strategy and policy,” IBM Australia and New Zealand managing director Kerry Purcell said in a statement.

“The NCSC will drive a culture of innovation and openness, essential if we are to tackle this growing issue for every organisation.”

“To overcome the growing volume and sophistication of cyber attacks, and the global shortage of skilled security professionals, organisations and government need to partner, draw greater insights from data and share information,” Zuccato said. “I look forward to working with IBM, our clients, partners and government to build Australia’s cyber security resilience.”

IBM said the NCSC would hook into the company’s network of security operations centres. The new centre will deliver access to the IBM X-Force Exchange threat sharing platform and emergency response field teams, and partner with the company’s Queensland-based security development lab.

The NCSC joins UNSW's Australian Centre for Cyber Security and the government's Australian Cyber Security Centre in Canberra.

The federal government in April launched its long-awaited cyber security strategy.
