Open-source startup hopes to change the way businesses visualize data

SlamData's main appeal is that it works natively with data from NoSQL databases like MongoDB.

A Boulder, Colorado-based startup announced today that it has raised $3.6 million in seed funding to build the commercial version of the SlamData open-source project, helping businesses visualize semi-structured NoSQL data.

SlamData, Inc. says that it's using the SlamData project's framework to create a native analytics platform for NoSQL information, building proprietary security and management features on top of the main feature set.

"The open source version is fully functional from an analytics perspective, but larger enterprise can't really implement it at scale without the features mentioned," said CEO and co-founder Jeff Carr. "A user could arbitrarily delete data, or even full databases, and they have no way to manage or track users."

SlamData's main appeal is that it works natively with data from NoSQL databases like MongoDB, which means it doesn't need to translate unstructured data into the usual relational format. That's an improvement over common analysis platforms like Tableau, according to SlamData, since that translation can be a time-consuming process.

The idea, according to Carr, is to do for semi-structured NoSQL data what Tableau did for structured data, and what Splunk did for completely unstructured machine data.

"We're following in the footsteps of these great companies," he said.

The company will release SlamData Enterprise and SlamData OEM by the end of the year, according to Carr. The former will be licensed on a per user basis, and the latter on a per application one, though the company declined to provide specific price points.
