Telstra to aid Komatsu's hybrid cloud transition

Telco announces three-year extension of 15-year relationship with mining equipment manufacturer

Telstra today revealed it had won an extension to its 15-year relationship with Komatsu.

Under the $23 million, three-year contract, the telco will provide M2M services to the mining and equipment manufacturer. The deal also covers telecommunications and cloud infrastructure services.

Telstra said that one of Komatsu's recent M2M projects was a trial involving remote downloading of diagnostic data from equipment at mine sites. The data could was processed by Komatsu's inSite Centre in Sydney without needing to remove the equipment from use.

Cisco's updated Visual Networking Index, released late last month, predicted that M2M connections will more than triple over the next half decade, reaching 10.5 billion by 2019.

Global M2M IP traffic will grow to 4.6 exabytes a year by 2019, the networking vendor is predicting.

Komatsu has used Telstra cloud services for its infrastructure since 2010, according to the telco.

The company will this year move to a hybrid setup that includes a private cloud that hooks up to Microsoft's Azure platform.

"From the beginning of our cloud journey with Telstra, the focus has been on giving more time back to the business so we can innovate and adapt, and not worry about IT," Komatsu CIO Ian Harvison said in a statement.

"This new agreement will be an extension of our collaborative relationship and will ensure we continue to lead our category within the mining sector."

"We're committed to business innovation and staying one step ahead of our customer’s needs – and it’s only through relationships with key partners like Telstra that this is possible," Komatsu Australia CEO Sean Taylor said.

"We’re excited about the next phase in our ICT strategy and look forward to many more years of innovation."

Earlier this year Telstra revealed that Dairy Farm Group had signed a multi-million dollar agreement with the telco that will see DFG, which operates 5800 stores across Asia, including Ikea and 7-Eleven outlets, migrate its SAP suite to a private cloud.
