Telstra, Racing Victoria sign 10-year partnership

Deal covers broadcast, media and data services

Racing Victoria has teamed up with Telstra for a 10-year partnership which covers broadcast, media and data services.

The state racing body will adopt the telco’s digital video network in early 2016, use licences for Telstra owned video analytics firm Ooyala, production services from Chief Entertainment and satellite delivery services from Globecast.

From next year, Racing Victoria will be able to deliver multiple broadcast feeds from Victoria’s 24 race courses. Racing fans will be offered multiple camera angles while broadcasters such as Fox Sports can enhance the live vision with data overlays.

Changes will be made to thoroughbred racing site Racing.com with live video streams offered on the mobile site for punters. Telstra fixed Internet subscribers will be offered unmetered downloads from the website.

In addition, technology upgrades will be made at Racing Victoria’s integrity control room. Based at Flemington, the room supports race stewards who supervise the conduct of race meetings around Victoria.

The racing body plans to roll out live video conferencing so that staff can talk to race stewards in other locations, photo finish feeds and integrate Hawk-Eye and associated video technology.

Video conferencing will be used during the 400 races the organisation holds every year.

Racing Victoria CEO Bernard Saundry said the partnership with Telstra provides Racing Victoria with innovative technology solutions to support its media strategies.

“Fans of Victorian racing will see improved speed of replays available from Racing.com and our broadcast partners and Telstra fixed Internet customers will enjoy unmetered coverage when viewing Victorian racing online at Racing.com,” he said in a statement.

Saundry added that the arrangement supports its mobile-first strategy.
