Telstra to wholesale 4G from June 2016

Will join Optus in providing 4G to wholesale customers

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) on the Telstra network could launch 4G plans in the middle of next year, under a timeline revealed today by Telstra.

Telstra said it plans to open its LTE network to wholesale customers “no later than June 2016.”

Telstra wholesale customers include Aldi Mobile, Ozlinked and TeleChoice. The timeframe does not apply to Boost Mobile, which is technically a Telstra reseller.

“Our 3G product continues to provide a high quality experience for end users but with mobile data use continuing to grow we know many of our MVNO customers are keen to have the opportunity to offer 4G services on Australia’s leading mobile network,” said Stuart Lee, group executive of Telstra Wholesale.

“We have commenced the technical work necessary at a network and platform level to ensure we can offer 4G next year. We will also begin discussions with our customers on whether they will add 4G to their products.”

To date, Optus is the only wholesale 4G provider in the Australian market. As a result, only MVNOs on the Optus network are yet able to provide 4G services.
