Eftpos' online play moves closer with Coles trial

ANZ, Commonwealth Bank also launching online trials

Payment provider Eftpos has unveiled an online payments trial in conjunction with supermarket chain Coles. Some 350 consumers will participate in the trial.

Participants will be able to use the new online payments platform to make purchases from a Coles website.

"Online is the biggest play in terms of payments other than point of sale so this is quite an important point in history for us as a company," Eftpos CEO Bruce Mansfield said.

Eftpos expects more trials to follow ahead of commercialisation of the online platform next year.

The organisation late last year announced it was launching trials of mobile and online payment solutions.

The mobile trials involved around 20 small businesses such as cafes and restaurants.

"In the background we've been working on the online solution with a couple of players including the Commonwealth Bank and others, but this is the first time we've gone out in a big way to consumers," Mansfield said.

Eftpos believes it will offer a cost advantage compared to other online payment options, which will help make its service attractive to Australian businesses, particularly SMBs.

The online payments platform supports real-time transaction updates and features that let users set payment limits after which additional security features kick in, the company said.

"While Eftpos is the most widely used debit card system in Australia at point of sale, we are now moving into the digital world with online payments," Mansfield said.

The company said it is working with the Commonwealth Bank and ANZ for further online trials "over the coming months".
