As expected, Microsoft officials today unveiled Office for Apple's iPad, breaking with the company's past practice of protecting Windows by first launching software on its own operating system.
The announcement came at a press event in San Francisco led by CEO Satya Nadella. The suite is slated to be available on the App Store at 11 a.m. PT, 2 p.m. ET.
The suite is available for all users to download for free to read and present content, but will rely on what the company calls a "freemium business model" tied to an Office 365 subscription for content creation and editing.
