Victorian TAFEs zero in on ROI with system refresh

Nine colleges across the state deploy new student management platform

The Victorian government has completed deployment of a student management system for nine TAFE colleges across the state.

The TechnologyOne system lets each TAFE analyse return on investment of each course, unit and student, taking into account staff wages, equipment, subsidies and grants.

“Prospective students will have the ability to apply for entry, enrol in their selected courses and pay their fees online,” said GippsTAFE CEO Peter Whitley.

“We see this as a way of improving client service and accessibility, as well as contributing to more efficient back office operations.”

The management system will support the TAFEs’ transition to new contestable training markets, and is expected to reduce costs and enable the TAFEs to adopt emerging technologies including smart mobile devices, said TechnologyOne founder Adrian Di Marco.

TechnologyOne builds, implements and runs its own software, and Di Marco took the opportunity to slam third-party integrators IBM and Accenture who manage Oracle or SAP implementations.

“Using third-party integrators introduces added cost and complexity, and runs the risk of implementation disasters such as the failed Queensland Health Payroll system. We take complete, end-to-end responsibility for our customer implementations.”

He was referring to a Queensland Health payroll system that went live on 8 March 2010 and incorrectly overpaid thousands of health workers. It was estimated to cost the Queensland government $1.2 billion to repair.
