Nextgen Group subsidiary, Metronode, has officially opened its new data centre in Silverwater, West Sydney.
Metronode won a $182 million contract in May 2012 with the New South Wales government to build two Tier III facilities in Silverwater and Unanderra.
The data centres will be used by the NSW government as part of its Data Centre Reform Strategy. Under the strategy, NSW agencies will be required to move from 130 existing decentralised government data centres into the two whole-of-government purpose built facilities by 31 December 2015.
The Departments of Health and the Department of Education have been confirmed as anchor tenants in Silverwater.
According to Metronode general manager Malcolm Roe, the Silverwater facility utilises direct free air-cooling and modular plant systems to deliver power utilisation efficiency.
“On-site rain water harvesting and an intelligent site monitoring system provides further environmental enhancements at the facility,” he said in a statement.
The data centre has a Power Utilisation Efficiency (PUE) of 1.2, covers more than 16,800 square metres and will be capable of supporting up to 9 megawatts (MW) of IT load.
Metronode is also rolling out new eco-friendly data centres in Perth and Canberra. In addition, it operates facilities in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
