Internet boosts information services revenue

Revenue from Internet-based information services in the US grew 65 per cent in 1999 to $US19 billion, according to the most recently released data from the US Census Bureau. Internet access fees accounted for $US9 billion, an increase of 63 per cent from the year before, and earnings from the information services sector as a whole amounted to $US776 billion in 1999, up 12 per cent on 1998. The sector includes new syndicates, software and print publishers, telecommunications firms and libraries.

Telecommunications firms were the highest earning group within that sector, accounting for $US319 billion, up 12 per cent. Revenues from cellular and other wireless communications firms amounted to $US46 billion, up 30 per cent
