Australian surfers rely on portals, directory sites

Ninemsn.com.au was the most visited Web site in Australia last year, followed by Yahoo.com.au and telstra.com and the telephone directory sites Whitepages.com.au and Yelowpages.com.au, according to Australian research company Red Sheriff.

Surveys also showed that Australian men were more likely to visit sports, news and finance sites, while women were more attracted to travel, real estate and entertainment sites.

Unsurprisingly, home users were far more likely to visit entertainment and leisure sites than work users, who tended to use online directories and finance, career and travel sites.

Red Sheriff also found that people living outside the major cities in Australia warmed to the Internet in 2000. Uptake of the Internet in rural and regional areas had been slow but is now occurring at a faster rate than in urban areas.
