BMC offers application-centric storage tools

Looking to storage performance by maximizing application performance, BMC Software Inc. on Tuesday launched its Patrol Application Storage Resource Manager at Storage Networking World 2001 here.

Patrol technology attacks storage management issues like resource allocation by analyzing the performance and activity of the applications that interact with storage, according to BMC. By identifying where an application is grabbing or dumping data in a storage network, administrators can better allocate available storage space while making sure they are getting the most from their applications.

"[BMC is] totally focused on making sure applications meet their service levels," said BMC president and CEO Bob Beauchamp. "[And] we are able to tell you which applications are consuming storage at what rate."

Beauchamp said that at a time when many companies are closely scrutinizing IT spending, Patrol software helps optimize existing storage investments.

Patrol Application Storage Resource Manager is the last of four components that comprise BMC's Application-Centric Storage Management (ACSM) initiative, Beauchamp said. ACSM combines the new software with Patrol Storage Network Manger software, Patrol Storage Resource Manager software, and a family of software technology BMC calls Knowledge Modules. Knowledge Modules, such as Patrol for Network Appliance filers, discover, capture, store, and report event information from third-party storage products.

To help foster Patrol's interoperability across multiple platforms, BMC, in Houston, has partnered with a number of major storage and networking vendors including EMC Corp., Hitachi Ltd., McData Corp., Crossroads Systems Inc., Brocade Communications Systems Inc., Nishan Systems Inc., and Cisco Systems Inc.

Storage Networking World 2001 runs through Wednesday, April 11.
