Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) and Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN) have completed a 40Gbps upgrade to a fibre link connecting Sydney and North America.
The upgrade has been made to the SXTransPORT submarine link and increases the bandwidth from 10Gbps.
“Increasing the bandwidth of the SXTransPORT ensures Australia continues to play an integral role in collaborating globally in major research programs, including those in the big science arenas of radio astronomy, climate modelling and high energy physics,” Chris Hancock, AARNet CEO, said in a statement.
The SXTransPORT connects AARNet to research and education networks around the world.
AARNet and Southern Cross Cable Networks signed the first agreement for the optic fibre link in 2003.
The southern part of the SXTransPORT link will also be upgraded to 40Gbps by the end of this year.
AARNet also recently increased the terrestrial section of its Square Kilometre Array (SKA) backbone to 100Gpbs in Western Australia.
“National research and education networks are rapidly moving to reinvent themselves in this global open exchange world - the concept of becoming Global Research Networks (GRENs) to meet the future demand for high-performing international data connectivity is imminent,” Hancock said.
