Amazon launches Web services from Brazil

Amazon Web Services has set up data centers in Brazil to service South American customers

Amazon Web Services has launched services for South American customers from data centers in Brazil, the company said Wednesday.

The new AWS South America (Sao Paulo) Region is the eighth geographic region worldwide in which the company has deployed its cloud computing platform, and the first in South America, AWS said.

The company already has data centers in the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Singapore. It added in November its seventh region, targeting parts of western U.S., and supported by infrastructure located in Oregon.

The service in South America will help a number of existing customers of AWS who have been using the service from existing AWS regions across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. These customers can now run their applications in Brazil, significantly reducing latency, besides meeting any need to have their data reside in South America, AWS said.

AWS services including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) are now available to South American customers and developers, AWS said.

Besides already having customers in the region, AWS hopes to benefit from the presence in the region of partners that are building and selling applications and services around its infrastructure, including global players like Oracle and Accenture. The software vendors and system integrators have or will soon be making their software services available on AWS in the region, the company said.
