Nearly half (49 per cent) of firms that use virtualisation say they have delays in resolving IT problems because of a lack of visibility into their whole IT infrastructure, according to a survey.
45 per cent of respondents also said that the lack of visibility is slowing down their organisation's adoption of virtualisation.
The global survey of 253 CIOs, carried out by Vanson Bourne on behalf of VMware management solutions provider Veeam Software, also revealed widespread desire among the respondents for a single management tool that can provide visibility into both on-premise and virtualised systems. All those surveyed were users of VMware vSphere.
80 per cent of respondents who currently use specialist tools but would prefer to use traditional enterprise-wide management tools, said that they were not able to because the traditional tools did not give the required level of granularity for monitoring, managing and making changes to virtual infrastructure.
"They [traditional tools] don't provide any visibility or only very basic visibility because those frameworks were not built with virtualisation in mind," said Ratmir Timashev, CEO and president of Veeam.
"The virtual environment is much more dynamic and you have to plan for more capacity in advance, whereas in the physical world you have more time [to plan]."
45 per cent of respondents also said that the lack of visibility is slowing down their organisation's adoption of virtualisation.
Furthermore, respondents expressed a desire to be able to manage different virtualisation systems from the same dashboard.
71 per cent said they had difficulty doing so managing the VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors from a single console, while 68 per cent wanted a single dashboard for managing them both.
"The future of virtualisation must be about co-existence," Timashev said.
