Westfield launches online mall

Shopping centre company Westfield (ASX:WDC) has launched an online shopping mall, that will allow the purchase of products from over 100 retailers via a single checkout system

Shopping centre operator and developer Westfield (ASX:WDC) has launched its first online shopping mall.

The site, Westfield.com.au, currently includes more than 50 retailers, with around 50 more to be added in the coming weeks to round out phase one of the project.

Products from each store can be purchased through a single checkout, and the site will give online consumers the option to compare products from multiple retailers. Users may search by shop, category, product, brand, price and size.

Retailers will process customer orders directly, with transactions covered by 256 bit SSL encryption.

Already more than 150,000 products across 3,000 brands are available for purchase, Westfield said.

Westfield group managing director, Steven Lowy, said the move represented the creation of a new marketplace for the company.

“Our first step into online shopping poses both challenges as well as enormous opportunities to develop our business in new ways,” he said.

WDC shares ended Wednesday's trading 0.84 per cent lower at $11.810.
