Sprint inks deal for metro networks

Sprint this week revealed that it has signed a deal with Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. to access MFN's fiber in metro areas across the U.S.

The fiber will allow Sprint to extend its backbone network into the metro area and reduce the long-distance carrier's reliance on incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) intra-city trunking services.

MFN also has direct fiber connections to some buildings in the metro areas that Sprint may be able to use, says Tom Burns, president of carrier services for MFN. This would allow Sprint to bypass the ILECs altogether for customers in those buildings.

Sprint will initially build out networks in 10 markets - Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Some of the markets should be ready by Q2, 2002.

Under the agreement, Sprint may lease fiber in other markets as well.
