IDC: PC market hot in Q3

IDC results mirror those of rival firm, Gartner

The Asia-Pacific PC market (excluding Japan) grew by 17 per cent from July to September compared to the same period last year, according to research firm, IDC.

This result follows on from similar research completed recently by rival analyst firm, Gartner, which found the market shot back into positive territory with a 16.1 per cent rise.

In the IDC results, the market grew 18 per cent from the previous quarter, with 23.4 million units shipped. The upward swing beat forecasts by 9 per cent.

Although portable PCs remain the key growth driver, better than predicted procurement from the public sector in China and Taiwan also drove the growth.

"Even though a lot of the momentum may be coming specifically from China, the enthusiasm should start to spread to the point where the entire region gets off on the right foot next year," IDC director of Asia-Pacific personal systems research, Bryan Ma, said.

Ongoing portable PC developments, ranging from ultra-thin notebooks to dual-boot mini-notebooks also generated increased growth, while Lenovo remained the top vendor in the region with HP hot on its tracks.

Australian-specific results were not provided by either analyst firm.
