SBC rolls out hosting services

SBC Communications' E-Services hosting subsidiary unveiled capabilities for storage-area networking, managed security and enhanced monitoring and reporting at NetWorld+Interop 2002 Las Vegas.

The company will now be able to monitor a client's hosted operations over a six-week period to establish what the network's normal operating conditions are and identify any potential problem areas. SBC will then establish thresholds, and if those are in danger of being exceeded, SBC will notify the client, who can correct the potential problem before it actually affects the client's operations.

SBC will monitor a wide range of potential problem areas, including CPU utilization and throughput. The managed security additions include firewall and intrusion detection services.

The SAN services will provide customers with highly available storage running over a fiber-based infrastructure.

The hosting operations will be based out of SBC's two data centers in Dallas and Irvine, Calif.

SBC also outlined its long-haul data and VPN strategy that the company first unveiled in March. As part of SBC's national data rollout, the company plans to begin offering IP VPNs, beginning with a software-based service, followed by a hardware-based Cisco Systems Inc. offering and finally rolling out a network-based IP VPN.
