Seminars highlight business role in IT security

Two security companies will kickoff a seminar series next week presenting real-world advice on building an integrated security environment.

Taking the focus beyond technology to business process and user management, RSA Security and Accenture said there is a demand at the enterprise level for more integrated security solutions and best practices - chiefly in access and ID management.

Mark Pullen, RSA Security business development manager, said companies want to lift their skills not just on detecting security risks, but also using IT security as an enabler to create a trusted [business] environment.

"They want an approach which goes beyond just implementing [security] tools or a firewall for example, but extends to process management with things like ID and access management and providing the right access and services to the right people in the enterprise."

The two vendors will run security seminars for CIOs and security managers in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra from next week which Tor Nordhagen, head of Accenture's Australian and Nordic security practices will address.

The program will cover practical advice on simple security issues such as establishing appropriate sign-on policies within an organisation, the legal implications of legislation such as the Privacy Act, and an overview of the ID and access management marketplace.

Norhagen said Accenture's own client research showed that security will be a top spending priority this year. However, CIOs were confused as to who to partner with on security technology because of the "lack of a leader in the marketplace".

"More IT executives realise that security is more about business process [management] than technology, but security vendors don't have a total solution to offer organisations beyond their own technology and into the business, policy and user management side," Norhagen said.

The seminars will run from February 17 to 19 in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
