Hamilton Island outsources telecommunications

Nomad Telecommunications is warming to its two month-old outsourcing contract with Hamilton Island Enterprises. The service provider has taken control of the island's entire telecommunications needs.

The deal, estimated to be worth in the millions of dollars, was signed in September this year and took effect in October when Hamilton Island's existing agreement with NEC expired.

According to Carlton Taya, managing director of Nomad Telecommunications, the company's role includes managing the mobile network, fixed lines, handsets, paging systems and the island's PABX.

Taya said part of the company's role is to install a GSM network for mobile communications as well as replace the island's overworked PABX.

Nomad and partner, Vodafone will deliver the mobile network early next year, and according to Taya, will install a new switch to enable combined fixed and wireless technologies on the island.

Taya said one of the challenges of the project has been the ability to manage a remote location. It has been necessary for Nomad to keep staff on the island, but once all Nomad's technology is in place, Taya said, a lot of the monitoring will happen from Sydney and Melbourne. Remote management is expected to be up and running within three months. Other plans for the island include introducing a new range of services such as in-room videoconferencing and Internet access, an Internet café and pay phones
