Unisys, NCR Intro Mainframe-Class Servers

New high-end servers arrived last week from Unisys Corp. and NCR Corp. These new servers are aimed at mainframe-class data centers, decision support and data warehouse operations.

NCR's WorldMark 4800 and 5200 are 450-MHz Pentium II Xeon servers that can handle from 50G bytes to more than 3T bytes of data. They can be scaled from a small server with 16 processors to a very large system with 2,048 processors. Each system has redundant power, fans, uninterruptible power supplies and server management.

The WorldMark 4800 is an entry-level to mid-range data warehousing server that can be outfitted with 50G bytes to 1T byte of storage. The 5200 fits the large-scale data warehouse and addresses from 600G bytes to multiple terabytes.

Pricing for the WorldMark 4800 and 5200 was not available.

Unisys also rolled out two new Aquanta ES servers for Windows NT -- the Aquanta ES2000 and the Aquanta ES5000. The ES2000 is a two-, four- or eight-way server that uses 500-MHz Pentium III Xeon processors. The ES5000, with a similar configuration, adds middleware, systems management and hardware to optimize its performance under Windows NT.

The added capability in the ES5000 includes three suites: Performance, Uptime and Management. The esPerformance Suite contains software for partitioning servers, providing several servers images for different work assignments and applications. The esUptime Suite provides redundant power supplies and fans, as well as software that collects statistics and can automate corrective actions when a failure is imminent. The esManagement Suite lets systems administrators monitor multiple server environments.

All Aquanta ES servers run on Windows NT, Unix, NetWare and SCO UnixWare 7.

The Aquanta ES2000 starts at US$6,000. The ES5000 starts at $6,900.
