Compaq appoints ex-IBMer to head e-commerce unit

Compaq Computer has announced that it has hired a former IBM executive to be vice president of e-commerce, responsible for all of Compaq's electronic commerce activities and offerings.

In the newly created position, Flint Brenton will report to Michael Capellas, Compaq's new president and chief executive officer who was appointed late last month, the company said in a statement.

Compaq created a unit dedicated to its e-commerce activities as part of a major company reorganisation announced in June. Company executives hope the reorganisation and new leadership will put an end to the losses that have plagued the vendor recently.

Brenton comes to Compaq from BMC Software, where he was director of application integration management. Prior to that, he was a general manager at a networking service company, which Compaq did not name, and held a variety of sales, marketing and management positions at IBM most recently as a business unit executive for the IBM Global Network in Dallas, Texas.
