An estimated "several thousand" Vodafone customers experienced difficulties with their mobile service yesterday following a problem with the provider's transmission network.
According to a spokesperson from Vodafone, the transmission network problem caused heavy congestion to the network in the Sydney CBD area and surrounding areas as far out to Mascot Airport.
The problem was detected at 11:30 Thursday morning and the congestion began to be eased gradually by about 1pm, the spokesperson said.
Several customers were expected to be without their full mobile services at 6pm last night, but "the vast majority" would be back on the network later in the evening, the spokesperson said.
According to the spokesperson, this is the first incident Vodafone has experienced with its transmission network in its five year life time.
The company is investigating the problem to prevent further outages.
Technical details on the problem were unavailable.
