CSC teams up with C&WO

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) has announced a $500 million deal to sell its telecommunications infrastructure to Cable & Wireless Optus (C&WO).

The telco will provide communications infrastructure products to support CSC's professional services and outsourcing businesses in Australia.

Donna Bullock, CSC Australia's marketing director, said C&WO was chosen after a tender process because it meets CSC's current and future needs, is flexible and cost-effective and provides access to leading-edge technology.

"We determined they were capable of delivering the flexibility and forward technology we require," she said. "There's a high degree of synergy between what we want to do and what they are able to do."

The partnership, which is for a five-year period with the option to extend to 11 years, is expected to be worth more than half a billion dollars. CSC is one of the world's largest providers of IT professional services to corporates and governments, including local bodies such as AMP, Energy Australia, the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and the Australian Electoral Commission.

"We offer a whole raft of services," Bullock said. "Underpinning all those things are the internal telco requirements, both for our company internally and for the services we provide for our customers.

"Obviously technology changes but the important thing is that we have access to the new technology so we can include it in the bundle for our customers."

The two companies are currently negotiating the final details of the agreement, which is expected to become effective in January.

"It's exciting," Bullock said. "There's a great commitment from both companies. We're ready to move forward now, and when better to do it than in time for the year 2000?"
